The History of Frisbee

Who invented the Frisbee? Did you know it was originally spelled Frisbie?

New England college kids bought pies from the Frisbie Baking Company (1871-1958) and discovered that the pie tins could be spun thru the air for a game of great fun. Yale claims that in 1820 an undergrad named Elihu Frisbie grabbed a collection plate and flung it first. This sport of spinning pie tins went on for decades.

Whoever thunk it up first, Walter Morrison and Warren Franscioni improved the design by inventing a plastic version that could fly farther and be thrown with more accuracy than the original pie tin, calling it a Flyin Saucer after the Roswell UFO craze.

Their marketing efforts backfired when a lady sued after being hit in the head during a Frisbee demonstration, and again when a comic strip they’d made a deal with threatened to sue when they took the deal too far.

Morrison struck out on his own redesigning the Frisbee yet again, calling his Frisbie the Pluto Platter. His design became the basic design for all modern Frisbies. A new toy company named Wham-O bought the rights and started spinning out Frisbies in 1957, renaming the toy to Frisbee. The Frisbie Baking Company shut down shortly after and Fred Morrison was awarded a patent for his flying disc, receiving over $1,000,000 in royalties. Warren Franscioni got lost in the shuffle.

The Frisbee soared high under Wham-O, becoming incredibly popular as a new sport, selling more than $100,000,000 Frisbees before selling the rights to Mattel. While under Wham-O, Ed Headrick of Wham-O improved upon the Frisbee by creating a band of raised ridges that stabilized the flight of the Frisbee. Where once the Frisbee wobbled wildly thru the air, now it flew a smooth path. The new design was called the Rings of Headrick.

In 1967 high school students in Maplewood, New Jersey invented Ultimate Frisbee, a sport that draws from soccer, football and basketball. In 1975 Frisbee Golf (Disc Golf) became the hot new Frisbee sport, invented by Ed Headrick.

The History of Frisbee Dogs

Frisbee Dog, aka Disc Dog or Disk Dog, is a lively sport for dogs catching Frisbees. Starting in the early 1970’s and shooting to popularity in 1974 when Alex Stein jumped the fence at Dodger stadium baseball game and starting throwing Frisbees to his dog Ashley Whippet, who amazed the onlookers with her prowess and speed. It was such a novelty that the baseball game was stopped and Joe Garagiola announced the action as the dog leapt as high as 9 feet to catch the disk, and ran as fast as 35 mph. Soon after, Frisbee Dog sporting events became official.

Competitions and dog clubs include the Ashley Whippet Invitational, SkyHoundz, The UFO, The Flying Disc Dog Open, Yankee Flyers, Liberty Flyers and many others.
